Prokaryote speciation

We have a long standing interest in understanding the mechanisms of speciation in prokaryotes. Our research focuses on the impact of homologous recombination and horizontal gene transfers on the speciation process.

Evolution of gene repertoires

Prokaryotes have very dynamic genomes, where genes are frequently gained and lost. Most sequenced strains contain several genes found at low frequency in the species. We aim to understand the mechanisms driving the turnover of genes and its consequences on prokaryote evolution.

Evolution of microbial communities

Most animals contain a diverse community of microbes populating their gut. Many of these microbial species have been co-evolving with their host over long periods of time. We decipher the fine-scale evolutionary relationship between the diverse species of the gut and their hosts.
